Obituary for Gary Lynn "Umpy" Umbarger

Gary went home to be with the lord on Thursday Oct 26, 2006 at the age of 65.

He was born March 16, 1941 to Mattie Cottrell and Leo Glenn Umbarger on the family farm in Thayer, KS where he spent his childhood. Gary graduated from Thayer High School, Parsons Junior College, and Tulsa Junior College. He also attended Kansas State College at Pittsburgh and Southern College of Optometry.

Gary came to Tulsa in 1966 to work for Floral Haven Memorial Gardens. In 1967 he joined the Tulsa Fire Department and retired after 27 years of service. Gary also started Aaron’s Steamway from which he retired after 28 years. Gary retired to Grand Lake in January 2000. He loved the lake and his wood working along with building projects and cooking. He was a member of the retired Tulsa fire fighters, a 32nd Degree Mason, and Board member of the Zena volunteer fire department and Delaware rural water district #3.

He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife of 37 years Marilyn Grider Umbarger. He is survived by his wife Wanda June Umbarger, three sons -
Bob, Rick, & Jeffrey Umbarger, four grandchildren, step children and grandchildren numerous family members and a multitude friends.

Gary was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He had a kind and giving spirit and as he has left this world to meet those who have gone on before him, those left behind will carry on with his memory in their hearts forever.
