Ellen was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the daughter of missionaries, sister to four brothers. She attended high hchool in Ilo Ilo City, Philippines and graduated from high school in Columbus, Ohio. She received her associates degree from Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma and attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. She has traveled extensively and spent time in the Philippines and Vietnam. Ellen worked with the Red Cross at a military hospital in Vietnam.
