GENEVA MAE MITCHELL WEST MCCONNELL

Funeral services for Geneva Mae West McConnell are 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Talala with Rev. Lester Orwig officiating, with interment following at Talala Fairview Cemetery in Talala, Oklahoma.
Geneva Mae West McConnell, daughter of Ernest Fred Mitchell and Edna Mae Hudson Mitchell was born June 11, 1925 in Talala, Oklahoma. Geneva was one of 9 children in the Mitchell family.
Geneva was raised in Talala and attended Talala School from 1931 thru 1942. In 1938, Geneva accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized the same year at the Nowata First Baptist Church by Pastor Billy Philibur.
In 1946, Geneva met Alvin (Buck) West. Geneva and Buck were married in Nowata, Oklahoma on January 19, 1947. Buck was in the United States Army Air Corps from February 1941 to July 1945, active in World War II and the Korean conflict. In July of 1950, Buck was called back by the Air Force and they moved to San Antonio, Texas. Buck and Geneva were able to return home to their residence northwest of Talala the following year. Buck and Geneva had three children, Stanford West, Sharon Taylor and Felix West.
In July of 1962, Geneva attended Robert’s Cosmetology School in Tulsa and graduated in April 1963. She had a Beauty Shop in downtown Talala for several years. After losing her husband, Buck in May of 1971, Geneva moved her Beauty Shop to her home.
On April 21, 1973, Geneva married James Ray McConnell. The two resided in her home in Talala. Geneva and Ray both retired in March of 1987. They enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with their grandkids. Geneva became widowed a second time in May of 2002 but looked forward to the birth of her first great grandchild in the fall of that year. Geneva was very proud of her grandchildren but even prouder to be a GREAT grandma.
Geneva was an active member of Eastern Star and continued serving in the Oologah Chapter #473 until September of 2012 when she moved from the Talala homestead to St. Frances Streidel Assisted Living Facility in Collinsville. Geneva just recently moved to Oxford Glen Memory Care Residence in Owasso where she resided until her death on April 18, 2018.
Geneva was preceded in death by husbands Buck West and Ray McConnell, her father Ernest Mitchell, mother Edna Mitchell, and all 7 of her brothers. She is survived by her son Stanford West and wife Donna of Owasso, daughter Sharon Taylor of Oologah, and son Felix West of Perkins. Her sister Margie Doshier of Talala. Grandchildren, Amanda Salt and husband Brent, Zachary Taylor and wife Stephanie of Oologah, Alvin West of Tahlequah, Ashley Burnette of Owasso, Jason Burnette of Florida and seven (7) great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made to Physician’s Choice Hospice. Send a check or money order to Physician’s Choice Hospice, 2221 East Skelly Drive, Tulsa, OK 74015.
